Work Unlimited is a non-profit corporation whose mission is to provide vocational training and residential services to individuals with developmental disabilities. It primarily operates within Benton, Linn, Polk, and Marion counties, and includes a Specialized Foster Care program that operates in multiple counties across Oregon.
Work Unlimited grew as a result of a number of diverse efforts, all emerging from projects and programs developed by Teaching Research, a separate division at Western Oregon State College whose mission is educational and rehabilitative research. The first project to be named Work Unlimited was the adult vocational entity in Corvallis whose mission was to provide supported employment services to adults with developmental disabilities in Benton County. A similar vocational entity was established in Marion County. Gradually, the Corvallis entity provided vocational services to Linn County.
During this period, Teaching Research was conducting a number of residential programs for individuals with special needs over and above their developmental disabilities. Although Teaching Research staff managed the homes, the state's personnel policies prevented the remainder of the residential staff from being employed by Teaching Research. Therefore, a non-profit organization was sought to provide the personnel for the residential facilities. The ARC of Oregon was the first such entity. Later Work Unlimited in Corvallis took on the function. The decision was made in 1994 that Work Unlimited would also assume accounting functions for Teaching Research's programs. At the same time it was planned that all the Teaching Research programs would transfer to Work Unlimited in July 1995.
In May 1997 Oregon Community Support (OCS), an organization that was established jointly by the University of Oregon and Teaching Research, decided to stop providing services. The population for whom they provided services was characterized as being developmentally disabled and having severe behavioral problems. OCS had homes in three communities, Eugene, Salem, and Corvallis. Since Work Unlimited was already providing vocational services for individuals in Corvallis and was well acquainted with the population, Work Unlimited assumed responsibility for the homes in Corvallis.
As of 2007, the programs conducted by Work Unlimited for individuals with developmental disabilities are as follows:
Supported employment for adults, Benton, Linn, and Marion counties.
Small group home for adolescents, Monmouth.
Two five bed group homes for adolescents, Salem.
Two small group homes for adults, Salem.
Two small intensive group homes for adults, Corvallis.
Intensive foster care, multiple counties across Oregon.

History
In 1937, Phil Gerber opened Gerber Glass & Trim on Stony Island Avenue in Chicago, Illinois. Gerber operated as a glass company until 1978 when Neal Gerber, the grandson of Phil Gerber, expanded the business to include auto body repair in Skokie, Illinois. The Gerber family business grew to five locations by 1985 and was one of the first full-service, multi-location auto body shops in the United States.
In 1998, Eddie Cheskis partnered with Neal Gerber and set their sites on expansion. Gerber quickly grew to 16 centers throughout Chicagoland.
In 2004, The Boyd Group, Inc., a North American based collision repair company, acquired Gerber and changed the name of all facilities in the United States to Gerber Collision & Glass. This acquisition made Gerber one of the largest collision repair businesses in the United States.
Today, Gerber operates locations throughout North America with more than 1,000 employees.

Childhaven was established in 1909 by the Reverend Mark Matthews as the Seattle Day Nursery, one of the first 50 child care centers in the country. The site of the original nursery building, built in 1921 on First Hill, today houses Childhaven's new state of the art Broadway Center, completed in 2004 with a Capital Campaign of 15.5 million dollars.
In 1959, a board of trustees was formed and the first staff hired, ending 50 years of management by a volunteer board. Over subsequent years, the agency solidified its position as a leader in the community, involved in such significant activities as the development phases of both Head Start and the Model Cities Child Care Programs.
In 1973, Patrick Gogerty joined the organization as executive director. Under his leadership, Seattle Day Nursery made the transition not only in name - becoming Childhaven in 1985 - but also in its establishment as one of the leading and most forward-thinking child care programs in the country. Recognizing the critical need for services for our community's most vulnerable citizens, Childhaven's Therapeutic Child Care Program began at the Broadway Branch with 10 children in 1977, two years before the Washington State legislature mandated the reporting of child abuse.
Childhaven's mission now focuses on serving children ages one month through five years who are at risk of or who have suffered abuse and neglect. Childhaven runs three programs: · Therapeutic Child Care, Washington State's first child care program where children, referred by Child Protective/Child Welfare Services, Public Health and Economic Services Administration receive developmentally-focused care and treatment. · Drug-Affected Infant Program, also the first such program in the State, where children affected by their parents' substance abuse (either in utero or environmentally) receive care and treatment. Parents must be enrolled in an outpatient chemical dependency treatment program. · Crisis Nursery, King County's first and still only 24-hour prevention program to care for children when parents are in crisis.
The agency operates Therapeutic Child Care programs throughout King County: the Broadway Branch on First Hill (in our Broadway Center (2004), the Eli Creekmore Memorial Branch in Burien (1987), the Patrick L. Gogerty Branch in Auburn (1992) and the Lake City Branch (2005). There is capacity for treating 301 children each day. Childhaven's model program has been replicated in communities throughout Washington State, in South Carolina, and Calgary, Canada. The Building Futures Capital Campaign raised more than $15.5 million over a five-year period from a broad community interested in breaking the cycle of child abuse and neglect. The success of this effort and the resulting Broadway Center opening in 2004 has positioned Childhaven well for entering its second century in 2009. We are grateful to everyone in our constituency who has stepped forward in support of our work over the past 99 years. Thanks to all of you, Childhaven is changing the lives of hundreds of children and families every day.
