Kwik Bond Polymers was founded by Al Klail and Kiyoshi Sakakura. Kiyoshi while employed by Reichhold Chemicals, synthesized the current polyester resin binder back in the late 60s. It was a product before its time. Cal-Trans became interested in 1979 because of the superior adhesion properties and rapid return to service. PPC (polyester polymer concrete) sample bridges were demonstrated in 1981. Major demonstration projects took place from 1983-1985.
Today, PPC is specified by cities, counties and states, predominantly in the western United States. In most cases engineers have heard, by word of mouth, of the excellent, long-term performance of PPC overlay technology and more states are taking a closer look. Kwik Bond is frequently invited to provide educational seminars regarding this exceptional technology.
Al Klail is a formulating chemist specializing in epoxies and methacrylates. From the early 80s, his vision included educating civil engineers with respect to PPC and methacrylate technology as well as training contractors in safe applications. Al was also a general engineering contractor in California for a time and managed several of the largest PPC bridge deck overlay projects in California.
Today, Kwik Bond Polymers, LLC supplies PPC overlay and patch systems as well as high molecular weight methacrylate penetrating sealers.

Previous to owning ASCO Machine, Inc., Al Mannhalter managed a large (20+ employee) machine shop for seven years. In 1993, he opened ASCO Machine in a 1,000 square foot facility. Douglas County was named for U.S. Senator Steven A. Douglas (1813-1861). Senator Douglas was a Democratic candidate for the Presidency against Abraham Lincoln in 1860, and he was an enthusiastic Oregon supporter in the Congress. When first created on January 24, 1851, the County was part of Umpqua County. On January 7, 1852, the Territorial Legislature created new boundaries and renamed it Douglas County.
The County extends from sea level at the Pacific Ocean to 9,182 foot Mt. Thielsen in the Cascade Mountains. It has the entire Umpqua River watershed within its boundaries, and it contains nearly 2.8 million acres of commercial forest lands.
Approximately 25% of Douglas County's labor force is employed in the forest products industry which includes numerous sawmills and veneer plants, as well as one pulp and one particle board plant, and numerous shingle, shake, pole and other wood products plants. Agriculture is an important factor in the economy with field crops, orchards, and livestock as major products. The County Parks Department, the first in Oregon, has over 50 parks in the system. They range from large facilities with overnight camping to small boat launching access points.
Over 50% of the land area of the County is owned by the Federal Government. These lands are managed by the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land management. The 1980 census counted 93,750 people in Douglas County. There are 12 incorporated cities in the County: Canyonville, Drain, Elkton, Glendale, Myrtle Creek, Oakland, Reedsport, Riddle, Roseburg, Sutherlin, Winston, and Yoncalla.
