HOW TO NETWORK
The term "network" is just a fancy word for talking to people and letting them know you're looking for a job. Everyone has a network; you just have to figure out who's in yours and how to get them to help you find a job. Here's how to network:

Step 1: Decide What Types of Jobs You Want

Step 2: Make A Network List
Make a list of every friend, family member or acquaintance who has a job. Write down their phone numbers and addresses (if you have them).

Step 3: Prioritize the List
Identify the people on your list who are most likely to help you. For example, you might want to talk first to someone who has a job in the field you want to work in or a friend who knows a lot of people.

Step 4: Start Calling Your Network
When you call someone on your list you might say something like:

"Hi John, this is Tracy from church. I just completed a training course in computers and I am starting my job search. I know you work in the field and I thought you might have some ideas on how I can get started."

TIP: Be specific about your skills and experience. If the people in your network don't know what you're good at or what kind of job you want, they're not going to be able to help you very much.

Step 5: Don't Hang Up Without Another Name to Call
Even if the people you call don't know of a job, they probably know two or three people you can call. When you call someone who's been recommended to you, you might say something like:

"Hello, Ms. Smith? John Davis referred me to you. He and I go to the same church. I mentioned to John that I'm looking for a job in the computer field and he said you're very knowledgeable and might be able to steer me in the right direction."

Step 6: Follow Up With a Resume
Make copies of your resume and send them to anyone in your network who might be able to help (including the new people you've been put in contact with). Include a cover letter thanking them for keeping their eyes open for you and reminding them of the types of jobs you're looking for.

If you follow these steps, you will be amazed at how quickly your network expands.
